RXTE Monitoring of Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 4U 0142+61: Long-Term Variability

We report on 10 years of monitoring of the 8.7-s Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 4U 0142+61 using the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). This pulsar exhibited stable rotation from 2000 March until 2006 February: the RMS phase residual for a spin-down model which includes ν, ν̇, and ν̈ is 2.3%. We report a possible phase-coherent timing solution valid over a 10-yr span extending back to March 1996. A glit...

Chandra Observations of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 4u 0142+61

We present X-ray imaging, timing, and phase resolved spectroscopy of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61 using the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). The spectrum is well described by a power law plus blackbody model with Γ = 3.35(2), kTBB= 0.458(3) keV, and NH= 0.91(2) × 10 22 cm; we find no significant evidence for spectral features (0.5− 7.0 keV). Time resolved X-ray spectroscopy shows evide...

High-speed, multi-colour optical photometry of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61 with ULTRACAM

We present high-speed, multi-colour optical photometry of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 4U0142+61, obtained with ULTRACAM on the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. We detect 4U0142+61 at magnitudes of i = 23.7± 0.1, g = 27.2± 0.2 and u > 25.8, consistent with the magnitudes found by Hulleman et al. (2004) and hence confirming their discovery of both a spectral break in the optical and a lack of lon...

The Detection of Variability from the Candidate Ir Counterpart to the Anomalous X–ray Pulsar

We report on the detection of variability from the proposed IR counterpart to the Anomalous X–ray Pulsar (AXP) 1E 1048.1−5937 based on Chandra and ESO optical/IR deep observations carried out in 2001–2002. Within the narrow Chandra uncertainty region for 1E 1048.1−5937 we found only one relatively faint (J=22.1±0.3, J– Ks=2.4) source, while the recently proposed IR counterpart was not detected ...

SAX monitoring of the “ anomalous ” X - ray pulsar 4 U 0142 + 61

The 8.7 s X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61 was monitored by BeppoSAX between January 1997 and February 1998. This source belongs to the rapidly growing class of “anomalous” X-ray pulsars (AXPs) which have pulse periods in the 6– 12 s range and no plausible optical, infrared or radio counterparts. The BeppoSAX periods measurements show that 4U 0142+61 continues its spin–down at a nearly constant rate of ...
